Nadao Dhomasaroj Sets Wung Nam Thai Up For Its Next Caloundra Chapter

Nadao Dhomasaroj, owner and director of Wung Nam Thai Water Palace in Caloundra.

Wung Nam Thai Water Palace has reached the kind of business milestone that is easy to romanticise and hard to earn: 25 years of service, repeat customers and family labour in the same coastal community. The Caloundra restaurant, overlooking Pumicestone Passage at Bulcock Beach, is now preparing for its next chapter as owner and director Nadao Dhomasaroj looks to preserve the business while giving the next generation room to shape it.

Dhomasaroj, known as Dao, built the restaurant around a sense of place as much as cuisine. The name Wung Nam means water palace, a phrase she linked to the view across the passage when she first stood at Bulcock Beach in 2001. Before opening on the Sunshine Coast she had already worked in hospitality in Thailand, including time in her mother's restaurant and in her own business.

That background matters because the restaurant's longevity sits inside a broader local story about migrant enterprise. Thai food is now familiar across the Coast, but Dao began when it was less widely understood locally. The business had to introduce flavour, service style and cultural memory while also becoming a reliable local dining room for residents and visitors.

The family structure has become part of the operating model. Dao's partner Worranit Bhodhisook, known as Bia, joined as head chef in 2011. Their daughter, Prin Chivaramonaikul, grew up around the restaurant, studied hospitality management and marketing, and has now been involved in the business for nearly two decades.

Recognition has followed the long run. The restaurant received Australian Good Food Guide Thai category recognition for the Sunshine Coast in 2024, a regional Sunshine Coast Thai win in 2025 and a recommendation in 2026. For a family-run operator, those awards are useful public signals, but the deeper test is whether customers continue to return.

Dao's comments put that return trade at the centre of the story. Diners who first came years ago now bring children of their own, turning the restaurant into part of the memory of Caloundra holidays, birthdays and family meals. That kind of loyalty is not a marketing line. It is built slowly, table by table.

The kitchen's point of difference is still balance rather than novelty. Dao has spoken about central Thai influences, fresh herbs, chilli, lime, tamarind and fish sauce, and the role of formal cookery training alongside family knowledge. Her mother Surukhakha, now in her 80s and living with the family in Caloundra, remains part of the restaurant's food story.

The handover question is now the most interesting one. Wung Nam Thai has to respect the history that made it durable without becoming fixed in time. Dao says the aim is to honour what the family has built while allowing Prin to bring fresh ideas. For Caloundra, that makes the restaurant more than a dining listing. It is a small business succession story unfolding in public.
